Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
