The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.

Playoff Climax

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
