Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped following the blast was found soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a level above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
